Summary
The Department of Conservation and its predecessor agencies have had a long and productive association with the National Wildlife Centre at Pukaha Mount Bruce and the National Wildlife Centre Trust.
Since 2002 the Pukaha Mount Bruce Board, with the strong involvement of Rangitane O Wairarapa, has fulfilled the governance role at Pukaha and worked with the department to advance the conservation values on site.
This strategy emphasises the board and department's intention to continue the captive management work pioneered at Pukaha Mount Bruce in support of species recovery, while providing an educational and exciting visitor experience based on this work.
It also considers the possibility of the captive breeding of appropriate species for local release in support of the Pukaha restoration project and/or other restoration projects.
