This geographic history provides an overview of important sites, events, and themes of the park and establishes a context for the Department to manage its historic heritage.
Summary
This history begins with descriptions of early Maori settlements, it moves through European discoverers, including Abel Tasman and Dumont D’Urville, and consequential European settlements.
Farming and other activities are well described, followed by discussion of early lobbying for a National Park, beginning in the 1920s through to its creation in 1942.
The publication has an extensive bibliography.
