Summary

SS Wairarapa.
SS Wairarapa

The wrecking of the SS Wairarapa on Great Barrier Island in 1894 was New Zealand's third biggest maritime disaster. Over 60 victims were buried on the island at Onepoto, the largest shipwreck graveyard in the country. The site is significant because shipwrecks are a major public concern in New Zealand, where shipping plays such a vital role. Over 622 shipwrecks are recorded in the period 1860 to 1960 with the loss of 4835 lives.

One of a series of Heritage Assessments by Andy Dodd depicting historic heritage sites in the Auckland Region. Each constitutes descriptions of: history and fabric; cultural connections; historic context and significance explanations; management history and recommendations; information sources and references; a map and definitive photographs and a chronology of events.
