A Conservation Management Strategy (CMS) implements general policies and establishes objectives for the integrated management of natural (including land and species) and historic resources.
The conduct of some activities on land administered by the Department of Conservation can only take place by and in accordance with the CMS.
Those preparing regional and district plans under the Resource Management Act must have regard to any relevant CMS.
It must be noted, however, that a CMS is generally a statement of intent and does not override the provisions of legislation, general policy and agreements.
While the CMS outlines how the Department of Conservation will fulfil its responsibilities in this time period it also has wider ramifications, for example, providing guidance for present and future users of lands administered by the department.
