Long time member of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society and Rimutaka Forest Park Trust Bill Milne died in May, aged 82. The 2001 Wellington Conservation Award recipient worked tirelessly on a variety of conservation projects in the Hutt Valley and Wellington—planting trees, battling for the environment on various conservation committees, and restoring the dawn chorus in the Rimutaka Forest Park and native bush on Matiu/Somes Island.

He was committed to at least seven long term projects following his retirement, and was described by a colleague as “knocking off work to carry bricks”. Much of the work was spent on the vital role of pest eradication. His legacy includes the return of kiwi to the Rimutaka Forest Park and other native species to Matiu Somes Island.
