Hokitika Gorge Walk

Track category

Short walk

Time:

15 min one way

Distance:

650m

Description

Follow the walking track from the carpark for 4 min through podocarp/hardwood forest to the viewing platform. This part of the track is accessible for wheelchairs.

From the viewing platform you can look down to the stunning Hokitika Gorge and out to the lush farmland of Kowhitirangi. Continue for another 6 min along the curving boardwalks and you will reach the swingbridge. From here there are excellent views of the blue-green waters of the Hokitika River as it makes its way through the rock sided Hokitika Gorge.

Cross the swingbridge and when you come to the end of it turn left (straight ahead leads to private farmland). The track continues for another 200 m through the bush to the solid rock wall of the gorge upstream of the bridge. Good views further up the Gorge can be seen.

Getting there

Drive east from Hokitika to the intersection at Kokatahi. Turn right and then follow the road signs.

Plan and prepare

Young children should be closely supervised at the end of the track.
