The track crosses a pakihi swamp before climbing gently through a forest of kamahi and rimu to a lookout platform.

At the top you will be rewarded with views of the surrounding rainforest, coastal landforms, the Southern Alps/Kā Tiritiri o te Moana including Aoraki Mount Cook, and a glimpse of the Franz Josef Glacier/Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere.

Getting there

Head 15 km north of Franz Josef and take the Ōkārito turn off to the left. The walk is signposted 5.7 km on the right hand side of the road to Ōkārito.

Plan and prepare

  • Check the current track conditions and weather forecasts at the Westland Tai Poutini National Park Visitor Centre and i-SITE before starting your trip.
  • Always take warm and waterproof clothing as the weather can change rapidly.
  • Carry drinking water, insect repellent and sun protection at all times.
  • Dogs are not permitted on this track.
