From Masterton turn off State Highway 2 into Upper Plain Road and then into Upper Waingawa Road to the Pines carpark where the Barra Track begins.

Tararua Forest Park

Tararua Forest Park near Wellington features an abundance of tramping and hunting opportunities.


Description

The track sidles up the true left of the Waingawa River, reaching Mitre Flats (and hut) in 3 – 3.5 hours. The return trip can be completed in 6 - 7 hours. You can enter and exit the Northern Crossing via this track.

What to expect on a tramping track:

  • Challenging day or multi-day tramping/hiking
  • Track is mostly unformed with steep, rough or muddy sections
  • Suitable for people with good fitness. Moderate to high level backcountry skills and experience, including navigation and survival skills required
  • Track has markers, poles or rock cairns. Expect unbridged stream and river crossings
  • Tramping/hiking boots required
