The loop is off the Blue Range Track at the end of Kiriwhakapapa Road, 7 km from State Highway 2, about 16 km north of Masterton.

Tararua Forest Park

Tararua Forest Park near Wellington features an abundance of tramping and hunting opportunities.


Description

This well-graded and benched walk passes through forest that has regenerated well after being logged for its rimu and other podocarp trees in the 1930s. Another attractive feature is the many planted redwoods. A low-level tramping track follows old bush tramlines through to the Mikimiki valley, while the main tramping track ascends the Blue Range to the Blue Range Hut, approximately 2 - 3 hours away.

Plan and prepare

What to expect on a tramping track:

  • Challenging day or multi-day tramping/hiking
  • Track is mostly unformed with steep, rough or muddy sections
  • Suitable for people with good fitness. Moderate to high level backcountry skills and experience, including navigation and survival skills required
  • Track has markers, poles or rock cairns. Expect unbridged stream and river crossings
  • Tramping/hiking boots required
