Getting there
Take the Coast Road to Catchpool Valley, 12 km south of Wainuiomata in the Hutt Valley to access Big Bend Track from the Orongorongo Track. Or you can access the track from the Whakanui Track which begins at Hine Road in Wainuiomata.
About the area
Catchpool Valley is the most popular entrance to Rimutaka Forest Park. It includes Orongorongo Valley and its booked huts.
In the Rimutaka Forest Park you can enjoy some of Wellington's finest mountain biking, not to mention the native birdlife and walking tracks.
Description
The Big Bend Track follows along the true right of the Orongorongo River and links with the Orongorongo and Whakanui Tracks.
Plan and prepare
What to expect on a Great Walk/Easy tramping track:
- Moderate day or multi-day tramping/hiking
- Track is generally well formed, may be steep, rough or muddy
- Suitable for people with moderate fitness. Limited backcountry (remote areas) experience required
- Track has signs, poles or markers. Major stream and rivers crossings are bridged
- Light tramping/hiking boots required
