Getting there
Whitecliffs Walkway begins at the Pukearuhe boat ramp (please park to allow access to ramp and farmers property) which is located at the end of Pukearuhe Road, north of Urenui.
Description
This walkway uses the Kapuni to Auckland gas pipeline route for 14 km. The laying of the pipeline involved an immense amount of heavy construction work and these operations opened up walking access to the dramatic forest and coastal country of the region.
The walkway crosses open farmland (privately owned) to Mt Davidson, where it enters Ngati Tama private land. It then follows the pipeline route along the ridge tops before descending to the Wai Pingao Stream. Here you can divert from the track and return to Pukearuhe by following the stream to the coast (1.2 km) and walking south along the beach (tide permitting).
The walkway continues to the Parininihi Ridge high point and then descends to private farmland. The remainder of the walkway follows Clifton Road through private farmland to the sealed road at Tongaporutu.
The total length of the track is 14 km. Respect private land, use the stiles and keep to the track.
Prior transport arrangements are required at the Tongaporutu end.
Warning:
The beach between the Wai Pingao Stream and Pukearuhe (4.5 km, 1.5 hours) is accessible only at low tide. If you have planned a walk along the beach as part of your trip, please check tide times beforehand. For your own safety do not attempt the walk unless you can reach Pukearuhe no later than 2 hours after low tide.
Plan and prepare
- Be prepared for changes in the weather. Get local advice on track and weather conditions before setting out.
- Take warm clothes, including hat and gloves and waterproof raincoat.
- Keep to the track.
What to expect on a walking track:
- Easy to moderate walking from a few minutes to a day
- Track is mostly well formed, some sections may be steep, rough or muddy
- Suitable for people with low to moderate fitness and abilities
- Clearly sign posted. Stream and river crossings are bridged
- Walking shoes or light tramping/hiking boots required
