Backcountry huts

Powell and Jumbo Huts are usually bookable for the period between 1 October and 30 April via the online booking system. However, note that the opening of bookings for the 2014/2015 summer season will delayed. Until further notice, the hut ticket payment system still applies. For any queries please contact the Masterton office at

This booking system is in place to ensure everyone gets a bed and enjoys their stay during the peak season period, and to avoid overcrowding of these popular huts. See hut links below for booking details.

Generally, most backcountry huts cannot be booked and are occupied on a first in first served basis. Hut tickets are required for overnight stays. They can be purchased from some sports shops, service stations, information centres, and the Department of Conservation.

Backcountry hut tickets are not valid for Holdsworth Lodge or campground.

Holdsworth Lodge

Holdsworth Lodge can be booked online.
