The 750,000 litre reservoir, built in 1922, was once the water supply for Ngaruawahia. The track to the dam is on an all-weather metalled surface. Beyond the dam, the track changes to a tramping track and is very steep and slippery in wet weather.

Getting there

Hakarimata Scenic Reserve is near Ngaruawahia, 10 km from Hamilton. Access to Waterworks Track is off Brownlee Avenue, off Hakarimata Road.

About the area

The Hakarimata Scenic Reserve is a great place to see kauri and to enjoy a walk or tramp through native bush in close proximity to Hamilton. There are three access points to the reserve - off Waingaro Road to the south, from Brownlee Avenue and from Parker Road in the north. From each entry there is a walking track of 1-2 hours return as well as access to the Hakarimata Walkway which extends the length of the Hakarimata Range.

Before you go into the outdoors, tell someone your plans and leave a date to raise the alarm if you haven't returned. To do this, use the New Zealand Outdoors Intentions process on the AdventureSmart website. It is endorsed by New Zealand's search and rescue agencies and provides three simple options to tell someone you trust the details about your trip.
