Getting there

Piakonui Rd, in the Te Tapui Scenic Reserve, south east of Hamilton.

Description

Access to the track is off Piakonui Rd. There are a couple of small, unbridged streams to cross near the start, then it's a fairly easy but steady climb through bush to the summit and lookout tower. Views across to the Kaimai Ranges and Firth of Thames.

What to expect on a tramping track:

  • Challenging day or multi-day tramping/hiking
  • Track is mostly unformed with steep, rough or muddy sections
  • Suitable for people with good fitness. Moderate to high level backcountry skills and experience, including navigation and survival skills required
  • Track has markers, poles or rock cairns. Expect unbridged stream and river crossings
  • Tramping/hiking boots required
