Hakarimata Scenic Reserve

The Hakarimata Scenic Reserve near Ngaruawahia is a great place to see kauri, especially the large kauri on the Kauri Loop Track.

Description

Take the metalled walking track as far as the dam (built in 1922) which once supplied water to Ngaruawahia. Just before the dam, the tramping track branches off to the right and climbs steeply up to the Hakarimata Trig (374 metres). This section of track can be slippery in wet weather.

Plan and prepare

What to expect on a tramping track:

  • Challenging day or multi-day tramping/hiking
  • Track is mostly unformed with steep, rough or muddy sections
  • Suitable for people with good fitness. Moderate to high level backcountry skills and experience, including navigation and survival skills required
  • Track has markers, poles or rock cairns. Expect unbridged stream and river crossings
  • Tramping/hiking boots required
