Getting there

The track starts at the end of Parakawai Quarry Road, two kilometres south of the Wentworth Valley near Whangamata.

Description

This track along an old horse-drawn tram track (muddy in places) passes unusual andesitic rock formations enroute to the old camp and battery site for the Royal Standard Goldmine.  Beyond the battery site and tunnel are the Wharekirauponga Falls. The loop track beyond this point is steep and slippery in places.

What to expect on a walking track:

  • Easy to moderate walking from a few minutes to a day
  • Track is mostly well formed, some sections may be steep, rough or muddy
  • Suitable for people with low to moderate fitness and abilities
  • Clearly sign posted. Stream and river crossings are bridged
  • Walking shoes or light tramping/hiking boots required
