Current track conditions: Spring 2009

Track conditions

  • There are some snow patches on the track at the top of Red Crater, across Central Crater and in the gullies on the way to Ketetahi. If weather conditions change, ice may develop again. Sturdy boots and winter clothing are essential.
  • Difficult walking and/or navigation can be expected during spring, as snowfalls which can cover the track are still possible. Full alpine gear should be carried during this period (ice axe, crampons, and adequate cold weather clothing).
  • This rugged alpine trek is exposed and climbs to 1900m so trampers should have experience trekking in alpine conditions.
  • Not recommended to tramp the circuit when wind is strong, or there is poor visibility or icy conditions.

Be prepared

  • Trampers need to be prepared for the changeable alpine weather with tramping boots, windproof and rainproof jacket, trousers, and warm layers, warm hat and gloves.
  • Cotton clothing is not suitable in alpine conditions; this includes jeans.
  • Tama Lakes is a good alternative day trek.
  • There is rain water for drinking at the huts, however we recommend trampers treat all water in the National Park before drinking.

Staying at the huts

  • You will need to take cooking pot, utensils, sleeping bag, food and toilet paper.
  • From Saturday 25 October Great Walk passes are required, $25 per night for an adult.
  • You can buy these at the Whakapapa Visitor Centre.
  • Children and youths age 17 and under are free.
  • Gas heaters are installed at the huts.
  • Gas cooking is available during the peak Great Walk season, trampers should carry their own cookers during winter.
