Lucy's Gully picnic area

Discover this secluded picnic spot and enjoy the views from the comfort of your vehicle. The native forest and the gigantic Californian Redwood trees are a beautiful setting. There are several attractive picnic sites, and if you are mobile, there are short walks as well.

Getting there

From New Plymouth, follow Devon Street West south, continuing on coastal SH 45, 5km past Oakura. Turn off at the signposted access road.

About the area

This area is in the Kaitake sector of Egmont National Park, with track opportunities from a few minutes to a day.

Lucy's Gully was home to local Maori identity Ruhia Matekai (Lucy Stevens) and a base for a radar station during WWII.

Plan and prepare

Before you go into the outdoors, tell someone your plans and leave a date to raise the alarm if you haven't returned. To do this, use the New Zealand Outdoors Intentions process on the AdventureSmart website. It is endorsed by New Zealand's search and rescue agencies and provides three simple options to tell someone you trust the details about your trip.
