Walking track
About the area
Fiordland National Park is a vast, remote wilderness and heart of Te Wāhipounamu - South West New Zealand World Heritage Area.
Description
Visitor Centre to Lake Te Anau control gates
Time: 50 min
From the Visitor Centre, follow the path to the wildlife centre and up the track at the far end through the willow trees. The path then skirts above the lake passing the site where early naturalist Richard Henry had his house.
Excellent lake and mountain views are enjoyed as the track crosses open land below the golf course. The control gates regulate water flows between lakes Te Anau and Manapouri for the West Arm hydroelectric power station. They also mark the start of the Kepler Track, a 3 - 4 day walk.
A toilet is sited 5 minutes from the control gates on the track to Dock Bay.
Visitor Centre to Rodeo Grounds
Time: 30 min
Visitor Centre to Upukerora River
Time: 1 hr
Follow the Te Anau lakeshore toward the main shopping centre, then continue past the boat harbour at Bluegum Point to the rodeo grounds and on to the mouth of the Upukerora River. A shingle road leads to the main road 2.5 km north of Te Anau. The walk provides good views of the Murchison Mountains and Lake Te Anau. The round trip takes about two hours.
