Getting there

Shallow Bay is located on the Kepler track and can be accessed from the Te Anau township via the Control Gates to Rainbow Reach track. This track joins the Kepler Track at Rainbow Reach where you can walk on to Shallow Bay for a full day return tramp.

Rainbow Reach to Shallow Bay Track

Time: 3 hr - 3 hr 30 min return

Walkers can experience a section of the Kepler Track by walking from Rainbow Reach to Shallow Bay.

The track goes through mountain beech forest and across a kettle bog to the shores of Lake Manapouri. The Moturau and Shallow Bay Huts, sited near the lake shore, offer shelter and toilet facilities before the return journey.

Plan and prepare

What to expect on a Great Walk/Easy tramping track:

  • Moderate day or multi-day tramping/hiking
  • Track is generally well formed, may be steep, rough or muddy
  • Suitable for people with moderate fitness. Limited backcountry (remote areas) experience required
  • Track has signs, poles or markers. Major stream and rivers crossings are bridged
  • Light tramping/hiking boots required
