Shotover Saddle Route

Track category

Route

Time:

3 hr one way

Description

Between the prominent waterfall near Wilson Camp Stream and Red Rock Stream - just before Cascade Hut - find a leading ridge heading up towards the Shotover Saddle. There is no marked route to the saddle. There may be thick bracken on the lower slopes, but the going becomes easier on the higher tussock slopes.

Just below the saddle is a shelf with a large tarn at about 1500m. From here it's an easy walk to the saddle and magnificent views of the West Matukituki and Rob Roy valleys.

Plan and prepare

Before you go into the outdoors, tell someone your plans and leave a date to raise the alarm if you haven't returned. To do this, use the New Zealand Outdoors Intentions process on the AdventureSmart website. It is endorsed by New Zealand's search and rescue agencies and provides three simple options to tell someone you trust the details about your trip.
