Liverpool Hut Track
Track category
Tramping track
Time:
3 - 4 hr
Distance:
6 km
Description
From Pearl Flat, cross Liverpool Stream via the bridge 50 metres upstream, to the track at the bush edge, near the junction of the stream and the West Matukituki. It's a steep climb to the bushline; leading to the right on steep exposed shingle, rock and tussock, before bearing left up easy tussock slopes to reach a knoll overlooking the hut. When you first see this hut, do not sidle across to it from below the knoll, stay on the track.
Getting there
Liverpool Hut Track is in the Matukituki Valley, an hour's drive west from Wanaka.
The track starts at Aspiring Hut which you get to on the West Matukituki Track.
Plan and prepare
Before you go into the outdoors, tell someone your plans and leave a date to raise the alarm if you haven't returned. To do this, use the New Zealand Outdoors Intentions process on the AdventureSmart website. It is endorsed by New Zealand's search and rescue agencies and provides three simple options to tell someone you trust the details about your trip.
- Tussock and rock can be treacherous and slippery when wet or covered in snow.
- Plan properly and ensure that you follow the outdoor safety code.
- Overnight trampers need a sleeping bag, cooking utensils and sufficient food, warm and waterproof clothing - including gloves and hat.
- Good fitness and equipment make all the difference to enjoying your trip, especially as unpredictable weather patterns mean that cold temperatures, snow, strong winds and heavy rain can occur at any time of the year. These valleys aren't closed in winter, but snow can make travel difficult and dangerous.
