Description

One Mile Walk. Photo: N Edwards.
The old powerhouse near the start of
the One Mile Walk

Walk through the closest beech forest to Queenstown, in a creek environment that's home to numerous native birds: bellbird/korimako, tui, fantail/piwakwaka and tomtit/miromiro.

The track is steep in parts and follows an old pipeline up to One Mile Dam, once one of New Zealand's first hydro-electric power developments. You pass the old power house and several interpretation panels at the foot of the hill.

From the old dam there are several alternatives.

You can retrace your steps; go on to the Skyline Road to connect with either the Fernhill-One Mile or Ben Lomond Tracks or follow the signposts to Wynyard Crescent, which leads back to the waterfront and Queenstown.

Getting there

Starts from the One Mile Roundabout at the bottom of Fernhill Road, on the Queenstown-Glenorchy Road.
