Tokatoka

Tokatoka is a very distinctive landmark in the Kaipara district. The track surface is variable from grass, roots, soil and rock. The track ascends continuously; nearing the top there is a particularly steep but short climb of 20 metres before the summit.

From the top of this peak, the 360-degree views are stunning. It almost feels like being on top of the world and makes the 20-minute climb well worth it. You get great views towards Dargaville and of the Kaipara. On a clear day, you are able to see Bream Head and the Tangihua range towards the east.

Caution

  • This is a very exposed area; with a steep ascend over rocks. Take extreme caution at the top as the drop off is steep and there are no handrails, especially if you suffer from vertigo or are scared of heights.
  • Please supervise children at all times.
  • The track becomes very slippery after rain. Please take extreme care.

Getting there

The turn off to this reserve is located 17 km south of Dargaville on SH 12 at the Tokatoka Tavern. The reserve entrance sign is on your left-hand side near the top of the hill.

Plan and prepare

  • This track is steep and slippery after rain, children should be supervised at all times.
  • The nearest toilets are located at Dargaville to the north and Ruawai to the south.
  • In strong winds, please beware of falling branches.
  • Please ensure your footwear is clean before entering the bush, and is cleaned before visiting another site. This is to help prevent the spread of the kauri dieback disease Phytophthora taxon Agathis (PTA)
  • Permits are required for dogs and hunting on conservation land, these can be acquired free of charge from the Kauri Coast Office.
