Description

View from Paraawanui summit
Start from the boat ramp at Waikato Bay and walk 2.1 kilometres along the beach and around two points to Poroa Stream (one hour return). At high tide this stream can get quite deep, so it is recommended to do this walk during low tide.
The track begins at the marked post (look out for the orange triangle), where you head inland along a creek for approximately thirty minutes. At the signposted junction, turn left up a challenging incline to the summit of Paraawanui (142 m).
A few meters past the trig the views to the north are breathtaking - on a clear day the beaches and headlands of the eastern peninsula are visible up as far as North Cape.
You can find the best views just past the summit of Paraawanui. The entire walk is a three-hour return trip.
