Description

Puketi Forest, home of the rare kokako,
is being restored through the work of the
Puketi Forest Trust
This is a short, steep ridge track through beautiful kauri forest connecting the Pirau Ridge Road with the Waipapa River Track.

This track equates to approximately 2,133 steps.
Getting there
The Puketi Kauri Forest is signposted from SH10 south of Kaeo and north of Waipapa. The Forest can also be reached from SH1, north of Okaihau.
Please take care when you leave the State Highway as you will be travelling on unsealed roads. Please note that the Pirau and Mokau Ridges are closed to vehicles, access suitable for mountain bikes.
The Walnut Track is located off the far end of Pirau Ridge, which starts behind the camp, at the Puketi Recreation Area.
Plan and prepare
- Carry warm, waterproof clothing, and food and drink, even on short walks. Stout shoes or walking boots are advisable.
- You may wish to boil water from the streams before drinking.
- For longer tramps NZMS 260, 1:50,000 topographical maps are essential.
- No dogs or fires due to risks to wildlife.
- Leaving vehicles at road ends over night is not advisable due to the risk of theft.
