Activities on the Heaphy Track

Hunting

Hunting is not permitted within 500 metres either side of the Heaphy Track. The remaining area of Kahurangi National Park, hunting is by permit only.

Dogs are not permitted on the Heaphy Track due to the presence of kiwi.

Domestic animals

To protect ground-dwelling birds, no domestic animals are permitted in Kahurangi National Park.

Dogs

In general, dogs are not allowed in national parks. Only disability assist and dogs working with Search and Rescue are allowed on the Heaphy Track.

No horses

Horses are not allowed on the track.

Mountain-biking

Mountain biking is being trialled for three years over the season 1 May-30 September, until 30 September 2013.
