Getting there
To get to Piwakawaka Track, turn-off the main road (SH 6) just past Rai Valley, drive along French Pass Road to Elaine Bay. Piwakawaka Track leads from the northern end of Elaine Bay to a picnic area and beach
Water taxi services are available from Picton, Havelock, and French Pass to parts of the Sounds. You can also hire yachts, launches, motor boats, and sea kayaks.

This easy walking track leads from the northern end of Elaine Bay to a picnic area and beach.

This is a standard campsite in the Sounds area.
Plan and prepare
- The weather in the Sounds is generally mild, but conditions can change quickly, especially on the water. Ensure that you have adequate equipment and experience, and, if you are going out on the water, check the marine weather forecast.
- Light fires only in designated areas.
- Boil, filter, or treat water for drinking. On some tracks you must carry water.
- In late summer and autumn, carry antihistamine if allergic to wasp stings.
What to expect on a walking track:
- Easy to moderate walking from a few minutes to a day
- Track is mostly well formed, some sections may be steep, rough or muddy
- Suitable for people with low to moderate fitness and abilities
- Clearly sign posted. Stream and river crossings are bridged
- Walking shoes or light tramping/hiking boots required
