Getting there
Matiri Valley is a southern end gateway into Kahurangi National Park off State Highway 6, 22 km from Murchison; and from Nelson the Matiri Road is 16 km past Kawatiri Junction.
About the area
Created in 1996, Kahurangi is one of New Zealand's newest and the second largest national park. It's located in the northwest corner of New Zealand's South Island.
Description
It is a 3 hour walk to Lake Matiri Hut. From there you can do overnight tramps to 1000 Acre Plateau where there are two huts - Poor Pete's Hut and Larrikin Creek Hut. A challenging trip for well equipped and experienced trampers.

Plan and prepare
What to expect on a tramping track:
- Challenging day or multi-day tramping/hiking
- Track is mostly unformed with steep, rough or muddy sections
- Suitable for people with good fitness. Moderate to high level backcountry skills and experience, including navigation and survival skills required
- Track has markers, poles or rock cairns. Expect unbridged stream and river crossings
- Tramping/hiking boots required
