Rangiwahia Hut - Deadmans Track

Track category

Tramping track

Time:

2 days

Description

Day 1: Carpark to Rangiwahia Hut

Times: 2 - 3 hr

Follow the Rangiwahia Hut Track. A steep 30 to 40 minute detour track around an active slip is the only section of track that is not uniformly graded. Spend the night at Rangiwahia Hut.

Day 2: Rangiwahia Hut via Deadmans Track to Carpark

Times: 5 - 6 hr

Follow the obvious path up the tussock ridge on to the tops of the Whanahuia Range. Head east to Mangahuia Trig. From the trig, poles lead south-east down a rolling tussock ridge and down to the carpark.

Due to travel on the open tops this hike should not be attempted in poor visibility or bad weather.

Getting there

Travel past the villages of Kimbolton and Rangiwahia and continue along Te Para Para Rd and on to Renfrew Road. Follow this to the carpark at the end.

Plan and prepare

Before you go into the outdoors, tell someone your plans and leave a date to raise the alarm if you haven't returned. To do this, use the New Zealand Outdoors Intentions process on the AdventureSmart website. It is endorsed by New Zealand's search and rescue agencies and provides three simple options to tell someone you trust the details about your trip.
