Activities on the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk

Hunting

Hunting of introduced animals such as deer and pigs is allowed. Hunting permits are required.

You can get permits from the Department of Conservation

Some areas are closed to hunting during peak periods and while possum hunters are working.

Pig dogs are allowed from the 1st of May until the Friday before Labour Weekend, although some areas are closed to dogs year round. Dogs require a permit issued by Te Urewera Area & related field offices.



Other activities

Boating

The lake is suitable for most watercraft but conditions can change rapidly. Boat users are advised to carry approved safety equipment (it is now a requirement for every boat to carry a correct size, serviceable lifejacket, for each person on board) and observe water and safety regulations. Jet skis, houseboats and floatplanes, are NOT permitted on the lake.

Fishing

Brown and rainbow trout are found in Lakes Waikaremoana and Waikareiti. Fishing licenses can be bought at Waikaremoana Motorcamp.
