Description

Trampers at Arohaki Lagoon.
Trampers at Arohaki Lagoon

The track passes through impressive tawa/podocarp forest.

The ephemeral lagoon (rain fed) is surrounded by towering kahikatea and is often alive with frogs.

Birdlife includes North Island kaka, red and yellow crowned kakariki and kereru.

It should be noted due to the nature of Arohaki Lagoon being rain fed it won't always have water in it - but still well worth the visit! This is a very rare ecosystem.

Getting there

Whirinaki Forest Park is 90 km south-east of Rotorua. The track is reached via Minginui Road, off Te Whaiti Road (old SH 38), then via Old Te Whaiti Road and River Road to the Arohaki Lagoon carpark.

Plan and prepare

You need to be well prepared when tramping on conservation land, especially on the longer, day walks. Ensure you have strong comfortable boots, warm clothing, a good raincoat, first aid kit, food and drink, a hat and sunscreen. It is also advisable to leave your tramping intentions with a responsible person, in case you get lost.
