Henga Scenic Reserve Walk

Track category

Walking track

Time:

1 hr 30 min

Description

This 170-hectare reserve features spectacular regeneration by kopi (karaka) and mahoe. Other features are limestone outcrops and extensive dunes with endemic plants, providing views over Petre Bay.

From the entrance into the reserve at the Chatham Lodge, enter the bush and head west. A walk of approximately 45 minutes will take you out on to the coastal dunes to enjoy the views, return to the starting point along the dunes towards the south and then back through the bush in a wide loop. The whole loop will take 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Getting there

Henga Reserve is located on the Chatham Island's west coast. Proceed north from Waitangi township and take the North Road until just past the airport, then turn off at the Chatham Lodge driveway on the left. Public entry is provided by walking from the car park in front of the lodge to the northern lawn where the track starts.
