Description
The Tunnel Walk
Time: 1 hr round trip
This walkway joins an original Army zigzag track steeply sloping to Mechanics Bay.
The walkway leads through the tunnel (120 metres) and is lit by natural light.
The lighthouse is visible about the end of the tunnel. Climb back up the hill, past the empty shells of the wartime generator shed, battery plotting room and mini range. Near the site by the picnic area the underground shelters can be identified by the chimney and steel hatches.
Godley Head - Taylors Mistake Walkway
Time: 3 hr round trip
From the car park at Godley Head the walkway goes up the hill and stays above Breeze Bay. At the saddle the track crosses the Summit Road and from here much of the city is recognisable, including the Heathcote and Avon estuaries and New Brighton Beach.
The walkway joins the Taylors Mistake to Boulder Bay route, "Pilgrims Way", along which it is easy to see cave dwellings. Please note: Part of this track is precipitous and care should be taken.
From Boulder Bay the track climbs back up to the woolshed and car park.
Getting there
From the centre of town, drive to the coastal suburb of Sumner, then head up the Port Hills via Evans Pass Road. Turn left onto the Summit Road for to reach Godley Head car park.
