Description

Walks in the area offer stunning views
From Woodlands Road the path follows along a fence line to a suspension bridge which crosses the Wairoa Stream. The Wairoa Track then follows upstream to meet the Wairoa Tramway which it follows for 30 minutes to the first of several river crossings.
The track then climbs a steep spur, passing a notable stand of kauri rickers. Spectacular views of the Wairoa Valley to Ananui Falls are visible from the junction with the Lindemann Loop Track. The Wairoa Track continues southward before reaching another junction, near the site of an historic kauri dam. The track crosses a small stream and climbs a short distance to follow an old water race which was used to collect water for the dam.
The track finally joins the bed of an old log chute before reaching the Wairoa shelter and tent sites.
Beyond the shelter, the track joins the North South Track at the site of Cashmores Clearing.
Getting there
The Wairoa Track is accessible from the end of Woodlands Road, off SH2 near Katikati.
Places to stay
The Wairoa shelter has a toilet, but only river water is available for drinking.
