Karangahake Gorge Crown Track to Dickey's Flat

Alert/Important notice

Occasional part closure due to heavy rain.

The lower part of the Crown Track between the Karangahake Historic Walkway and the Underground Pumphouse will regularly be closed when heavy rainfall events are forecast.

Please note that the Underground Pumphouse and Dickeys Flat campsite will still be accessible via the Windows Walk when the lower Crown Track is closed.

These closures are so to ensure public safety which could otherwise be compromised by weather induced slips and rock fall which are regular occurrences on this track.

Description

Start from the Karangahake Reserve and follow the Windows Walk for 30 minutes. Turn east at the junction with the Crown Track to head towards Dickey's Flat campsite at the end of Dickey's Flat Road.

This track showcases beautiful scenery, good swimming holes and interesting mining relics. It is suitable for most fitness levels. Take a torch for the 180 metre tunnel.

Getting there

Located on the southern side of the Ohinemuri River. The main access point is the Karangahake Reserve Carpark on SH 29 at Karangahake.

Historic sites

The Crown Track passes the remains of the extensive Karangahake Mines, with optional short side trips to view tunnels and the impressive Woodstock Underground Pumphouse. Further up the Crown Track follows a pipeline and other relics from the gold mining days.

Swimming

Several swimming holes along the Waitawheta River are great spots to cool off on summer days.

Mine tunnels and shafts are dangerous and may be hidden by vegetation.
