About the area

Tramper at stream by Aongatete Lodge Campsite, Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park.

Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park

Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park has a number of historic mining and kauri logging sites within its boundaries. The park also features several popular tramping tracks.

Description

After going through a closed gate there is a track junction after 40 m.  The easiest direction is to take the right hand Lindemann Pack Track that runs up a short spur before levelling out.  After approximately 2 hours the track meets a junction with the Wairoa Pack Track.  This is a pleasant open spot that gives excellent views over the Wairoa and Waitengaue valleys.  To the northwest the Ananui Falls are clearly visible.  A few minutes detour down the steep track to your right (north) is a significant kauri grove.

After returning to the junction, continue south until meeting junction with the Lindemann Ridge Track.  A few metres south from the junction is a kauri dam site - the old bed log is all that remains of this site.  25 minutes further on is a small shelter and campsite area.  Return to the junction and follow the Ridge Track back to the carpark at Lindemann Road.  There are excellent views of the Tauranga area and offshore islands from the ridge.

Plan and prepare

After wet weather some sections of the track may be slippery and good footwear is advisable.

Please consult a topographic map.

You must be well prepared when tramping on conservation land, especially on longer day walks.  Ensure you have strong, comfortable boots, warm clothing, a good raincoat, first aid kit, food and drink, a hat and sunscreen.  It is also advisable that you leave your tramping intentions with a responsible person, in case you get lost.
