The Loop Track is a short walk orientated towards families or school groups to provide an experience close to town showcasing the beautiful flora and fauna of Mt Ngongotaha for all to see.

The first part of the walk follows an easy grade through unlogged native bush. It also features a large rātā tree with a viewing platform. Past this is a sign-posted intersection from where the Nature Loop Track begins.

The Nature Loop is a circular loop with gentle grades and even surfaces. After 1.3 km the Nature Loop crosses the Jubilee Track. The loop track continues on, looping back onto the Jubilee Track after a further 1.2 km. Head downhill to reach the carpark at the Violet Bonnington Reserve.

The idea and construction of the Mt Ngongotaha Nature Loop Track is part of the strategic plan of the Mt Ngongotaha Bush Restoration Trust. Their vision is to provide educational opportunities with easy access to the flora and fauna of Mt Ngongotaha for local people, particularly youth. This is proving popular with the local schools and the community in general. The Trust's work planting rata protected from wallaby and possums can be seen from the track.

Plan and prepare

You will need to be well prepared when tramping on conservation land, especially on the longer day walks.

Ensure you have strong, comfortable boots, warm clothing, a good raincoat, first aid kit, food and drink, a hat and sunscreen.

It is also advisable to leave your tramping intentions with a responsible person, in case you get lost.
