Getting there

This walk is reached via Minginui Road, off Ruatahuna Road past Murupara on State Highway 38. Access is via Fort Road, off Old Te Whaiti Road.

Whirinaki Forest Park

There is something for everyone in Bay of Plenty's Whirinaki Forest Park, from mountain biking to hunting to exciting adventure races, all with a back drop of untouched forest beauty and amazing native birdsong.

H Tree Track in Whirinaki Forest Park

The main feature of this loop track is an unusually shaped rimu tree.

The loop track runs through grand podocarp forest where birdlife includes rare species, North Island kaka, red and yellow crowned kakariki, robin and kereru.

Plan and prepare

Please note: This track is undergoing an upgrade for wheelchairs. It is still suitable for walking. Due for completion by September 2009.

What to expect on a short walk:

  • Easy walking for up to an hour
  • Track is well formed, with an even surface. There may be steps or slopes
  • Suitable for people of most abilities and fitness
  • Stream and rivers crossings are bridged
  • Walking shoes required
