About this hunting block

Location

Kiwi Saddle Hut is located in the southern Kaweka Forest Park in an open high altitude saddle. The surrounding countryside was substantially modified by fire in the late 1800s for sheep grazing. Overgrazing, poor soils and the harsh climate led to large scale erosion and sheep farming was abandoned here by the early 1900s.

Access

The Kiwi Saddle area provides bush and creek hunting with adjoining open clay pan and scree tops. The Kiwi streambed offers a good hunting opportunity, but much of the terrain surrounding the hut is steep. The hut location also provides access for day hunts to Castle Camp and the Studholme Saddle area.

Making the best use of main tracks when planning a hunting adventure will help ensure a safe and easy return.

Dogs

Only registered, avian aversion certified hunting dogs, guide dogs, companion dogs (certified by the Top Dog Companion Trust) and dogs used for special services (including conservation management activities) are permitted in the park. All other dogs are banned.
