Tararua Forest Park - Field track

Upgrading of the formation and drainage of Field Track has recommenced and will be completed by Christmas, weather permitting. The track will remain open during this period and users are asked to take note of signage and requests of workers on site during this period, as small motorised machinery will be in use.

The concrete bridge at Abbots Creek, at the bottom of the pylon track in the Tararua Forest Park, has been closed due to structural faults. The adjacent ford is available for use when water levels are low. Crossing this ford is dangerous when in flood.

The road from Corner Creek to Windy Point along the south coast adjacent to the Rimutaka Forest Park in Wairarapa is closed due to erosion and slips.

Pukaha Mt Bruce Scenic Reserve - pesticide operation

A pesticide operation has been undertaken in the Pukaha Mount Bruce Scenic Reserve to control possums and ship rats. Following the removal of RatAbate (diphacinone) toxic bait a four month caution period will apply which will extend through until December 2009.

Aorangi Forest Park - Aerial 1080 operation

An aerial 1080 operation is being undertaken by Greater Wellington Regional Council in part of the Aorangi Forest Park on 25 July 2009. The area of DOC-managed land affected by this operation includes the Bull Hill and Tauanui tracks and the area around Tauanui Hut. Baits will remain toxic for at least four months or until advised.

Lake Wairarapa pest control

1080 and Feratox (cyanide) has been layed in bait stations at Mathews and Boggy Pond Wildlife Reserves near Lake Wairarapa. Visitors are advised to follow the instructions on the signs when entering the area.

Tararua Forest Park - Ruapae and East Peak

A section of route between Ruapae and East Peak, north-east of East Peak on the tops between Herepai and Dundas huts, grid reference 214543, has eroded on both sides of the ridge. Roots and branches only are holding the ridge top track together. Please take care when tramping in this area.

Tararua Forest Park - Waiotauru track

An 80m section of the track has slipped into the river, approx. 10min from the Fenceline carpark at Otaki Forks. Attempts are being made to keep a route across the slip, but due to the current unstable nature of the slip care needs to be taken when using this area.
Present access is across the base of the slip and should not be attempted in wet weather or high river flows.

Pukaha Mt Bruce track closure

South Ohau Hut replacement

Oriwa Biv removed

Oriwa Biv has been removed and will not be replaced. There is no permanent shelter available at this site. (NZ Topo Map S25 E 2708300 N 6048100)
Camping sites are available, and water can be collected from a water tank.
The closest hut is Waiopehu hut 1 1/2 hours walk away (NZ Topo Map S25 E 2709075 N 6050664) – there is no marked track to the old Oriwa Biv site.

Mt Dagg Hut removed

Mt Dagg hut (Map No S26 E 224 00 N 362 00) has been removed from the Tararua Forest Park and will not be replaced.
