Recreation facilities in the backcountry

For your safety, every effort has been made to ensure this information is correct. However, you should contact the local DOC visitor centre for the latest updates. Changes to weather will affect conditions in the backcountry. Always check the latest weather report metservice.co.nz before you venture out and be prepared to change your plans if conditions are unfavourable.

Your safety is your responsibility. Make sure you plan, prepare and equip yourself for any trip into the backcountry. Follow the Outdoor safety code

To report any safety hazards or conservation emergencies call DOC HOTline - 0800 362 468. For fire and search and rescue call 111.

Access to some parts of the Forest Parks is across private land. To ensure this privilege continues please ensure the following:

  • Keep dogs on a lead
  • Take bolts out of rifles
  • Leave gates as you find them

Any other access conditions can be found on roadend signage.

Rimutaka Forest Park - slip reported on Mt Matthews Track

  • Issued: 31 October 2011
  • Valid until further notice

A slip has been reported near the top of the Mt Matthews track in the Rimutaka Forest Park. Please take care when crossing.

Tararua Forest Park - Burn Hut track

  • Updated: 16 June 2010
  • Valid until further notice

A track section between No. 2 and No. 3 creeks has an active slip. A track has now been constructed across. Take care when traversing this section.

Tararua Forest Park - Waiotauru track

  • Issued: 3 November 2008
  • Valid until further notice

An 80m section of the track has slipped into the river, approx. 10min from the Fenceline carpark at Otaki Forks. Attempts are being made to keep a route across the slip, but due to the unstable nature of the slip care needs to be taken when using this area.
