Fiordland National Park track & weather update

New Zealand weather patterns change rapidly. These changes will affect conditions on tracks and routes in Fiordland National Park. Always check the latest weather report (www.metservice.co.nz) before you leaving on your trip and be prepared to change your plans if conditions are unfavourable.

Fire restrictions:  Restricted fire season status applies to all of Fiordland National Park. This means a fire permit is required from the Southen Rural Fire District for any fire other than those in designated BBQ's.

Summer season: From 27 October until 30 April 2010 inclusive is the summer tramping season and summer season hut services and prices apply. Bookings are required for the Milford Track huts and  Kepler and Routeburn Track huts and campsites. All other huts and campsites in Fiordland National park can not be booked in advance an operate on a first come first served bases but hut tickets or annual hut passes must be purchased prior to staring your trip.

Trip Intentions should be left either with a friend or family member or can be left at the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre. Remember to cancel your intentions on your safe return to avoid costly searches. 

Hut and Campsite fees payable for all huts and campsites in Fiordland National Park.

All parties are strongly advised to carry either a Personal Locator Beacon or Mountain Radio. These are available in Te Anau.

Great Walks

Milford Track

  • Track is fully booked until late April - but check for possible cancellations.
  • Do not enter snow caves next to track. These are very unstable and likely to collapse if walked on. 

Routeburn Track

  • Limited spaces available till late February
  • Spaces available daily from March to late April.

Kepler Track

  • Spaces available daily.

Major tracks

Hollyford 

  • Annual track maintenance now completed.

Dusky

  • Expect windfalls and slips on the track
  • First three wire bridges from Loch Maee Hut to Supper Cove have been damaged and are unusable. Track will be impassable in and directly after heavy rain. Extreme care is required.
  • Alpine and route finding skills essential

Manapouri

  • Annual maintenance now completed.
  • Hope Arm Hut: There is sign mice and rats are present in huts. It is recommended you hang food up in hut and please take all rubbish with you when you leave.

George Sound Route

  • Expect windfalls on the track.
  • Route finding skills essential.

Gertrude Saddle

  • Not recommended due to avalanche risk.
    • Changes to other facilities and services

      • Borland road is open. 

      Didymo controls for Fiordland rivers

      Biosecurity measures have been put in place for Fiordland National Park rivers to limit the spread of didymo, an introduced and invasive freshwater alga. Approved cleaning stations and control measures are operating. Please view the Didymo Controls for Fiordland National Park information leaflet which includes a map showing the control areas.
