Mount Aspiring National Park

Always check the latest weather report (metservice.co.nz) before you venture out and be prepared to change your plans if conditions are unfavourable.

General Warning

High avalanche risk exists on many tracks that traverse avalanche paths or run-out zones. Be aware that avalanche start zones are high above these tracks and are not visible from the track. 

Rivers and streams in this region rise rapidly during periods of heavy rain - crossing unbridged rivers and streams in these conditions is not recommended, be prepared to wait.

Your safety is your responsibility. Make sure that you plan, prepare and equip yourself properly for any trip into the back country.

Gillespie Pass Track

  • Snow and ice present on Gillespie Pass- alpine section not recommended in current conditions.
  • Slip damage in the South Branch of the Young Valley - caution required.
  • The landslip dam that formed on the North Branch of the Young River in September 2007 still poses a potential risk to trampers. It is recommended that the Young Valley be avoided during periods of heavy rain.

Rees/Dart Track

  • Snow present on Rees Saddle. Fluctuating avalanche risk between Shelter Rock Hut and Daleys Hut - alpine section not recommended in current conditions.
  • Sections of the track are likely to be very boggy, particularly in the Rees Valley.
  • Upper Snowy Creek Bridge has been removed - river crossing experience essential.
  • 25 Mile Hut (OTMC) is unsuitable for accommodation, due to its derelict condition.

Other facilities  and services

  • Aspiring Hut: Hut warden and gas cooking facilities available. Colin Todd Hut radio currently not operational.
  • Mt Aspiring NP Visitor Centre hours: Mon - Sun 8.00am - 5.00pm.
  • Queenstown Regional Visitor Centre: Mon - Sun 8.30am - 5.30pm
  • Makarora Visitor Centre: Closed until December.
