Changes to weather will affect conditions in the backcountry. Note: This notice only reports on changes that differ to what is stated in brochures and on the website. Other tracks, facilities and services in Nelson/Marlborough are operating as normal.

Abel Tasman Coast Track

  • Check hut or campsite availability before making travel or kayak bookings.
  • Gibbs Hill track is closed to mountain biking.
  • Staff are working on the track at Anapai. Expect small delays.

Heaphy Track

  • Maintenance on Shiner Swingbridge will take place between 23-27 November. The ford will be used unless river conditions are high. If this is the case, delays can be expected while the bridge is prepared for use.
  • Crayfish/Koura Point - check tide charts in the Heaphy Hut and Kohaihai Shelter before starting this track section and only cross when sea conditions are suitable.
  • Mountain biking is not allowed on the Heaphy Track.

Travers-Sabine Circuit/Nelson Lakes

  • Caution is advised in the Sabine Valley due to avalanche debris across the track.
  • Snow and ice is still present on alpine passes.
  • Trampers need to be equipped and experienced.
  • Angelus Hut will be closed from 1 December until the end of April 2010 while a new hut is being built. During this period camping is strongly discouraged.

Other track and useful information:

  • Wangapeka Track - passing over the two slips between Gilmore Clearing and Belltown Manunui Hut, on the western end, requires care especially after heavy rain and is more suited to experienced trampers.
  • Nydia Track in Pelorus Sound has windfalls. All are passable.
  • Inland Track, Abel Tasman National Park - still has a few windfalls between Moa Park and Awapoto Hut.
  • The Loop Road, Summit Track and Big Bush Loops in Teetotal Recreation Area, St Arnaud are closed Monday to Friday while logging takes place. Enquiries to Nelson Lakes Visitor Centre, ph: +64 3 521 1806.
  • Red Hills Hut in Mt Richmond Forest Park is closed while a new hut is built.
  • Recently 1080 possum control operations in Golden Bay have taken place in Kahurangi National Park. Tracks in the operational area are: Heaphy Track from Brown River to midway between Saxon and James Mackay Huts, the side track to Shakespeare Flat, the Anatoki Track between lower Anatoki River boundary and Anatoki Saddle via Forks Hut, the route between Boulder Lake Hut and the Douglas Range. Signs will be in place.
  • Motuara Island access is closed temporarily while the track is being upgraded on the island.
  • Tasman District Council has closed the Left Branch Wairoa River public road and moved the locked gate 1.5kms downstream as the road above this point is no longer safe, and is liable to slips and rock falls at any time. Signs are in place. Tracks in the left and Right Branch have difficult windfalls to negotiate. Be prepared for difficult conditions.
  • Mt Richmond Forest Park access roads – in Blenheim this info is displayed on the North Bank road just off SH 6. For all information on access roads into the park check the Plan and Prepare page for the park, or at the DOC Regional VC in Nelson +64 3 546 9339.
  • Huts and shelters removed as agreed in the National Recreation Opportunity Review are: in Kahurangi NP - Loveridge Hut, Haystack Hut. In Nelson Lakes National Park - Upper Glenroy Hut and Prospect Shelter. In Abel Tasman National Park - reclassification of Moa Park Hut to Moa Park Shelter.
