For your safety, every effort has been made to ensure this information is correct. However, you should contact the local DOC visitor centre for the latest updates. Changes to weather will affect conditions in the backcountry. Always check the latest weather report metservice.co.nz before you venture out and be prepared to change your plans if conditions are unfavourable.

Note: This notice only reports on changes that differ to what is stated in brochures and on the website. Other tracks, facilities and services in Nelson/Marlborough are operating as normal.

Abel Tasman Coast Track

  • The track is being upgraded around Bark Bay estuary, Tonga Quarry and Onetahuti. Follow directions from DOC staff on site. Signs will be in place.
  • The off-peak season (adult hut $17, camping $8) finishes on 30 September.
  • Gibbs Hill track mountain bike trial finishes for the season on 30 September.

Queen Charlotte Track

  • A Queen Charlotte Track Land Cooperative (Q.C.T.L.C.) pass is required for all Q.C.T.L.C. private land between Kenepuru Saddle and Anakiwa. Go to www.qctlc.com for more information.
  • The track is open for mountain biking.

Heaphy Track

  • Mountain biking is not allowed on the Heaphy Track. The NZ Conservation Authority is currently considering a recommendation to allow mountain biking as a seasonal trial on the track. You will be advised here on this outcome.
  • The off-peak season (adult hut $20, camping $8) finishes on 30 September.
  • Crayfish/Koura Point - check tide charts in the Heaphy Hut and Kohaihai Shelter before starting this track section and only cross when sea conditions are suitable.

Other track and useful information

  • Salisbury Lodge, Kahurangi National Park - between 13 and 17 September 2010 a new grey water system will be installed at the lodge (22 bunks). During this period DOC staff and contractors will be occupying up to 6 bunks.
  • Cable Bay Walkway is closed until 8 October for lambing.
  • Wangapeka Track - passing over two slips between Gilmore Clearing and Belltown Manunui Hut, on the western end, requires care especially after heavy rain and is more suited to experienced trampers.
  • Mt Richmond Forest Park - DOC plans to close Right Branch Wairoa Track and relocate the Right Branch Hut. Because of extensive wind damage in 2008 and the loss of access across private land, the decision is to no longer provide or maintain facilities in this valley. Right Branch Hut will be relocated to replace Porters Hut on the Red Hills Route. Enquiries to DOC Motueka, ph: +64 3 528 1810.
  • Wakamarina Track, Mt Richmond Forest Park - access via Kiwi Road (Northbank) is closed. Remember you will not be able to exit from the Northbank.
  • Access to Saddle Hill, Zig Zag and Pukatea Tracks in Mt Richmond Forest Park off Central Road in Hira Forest are closed due to forestry operations.
  • Mt Richmond Forest Park access roads - in Blenheim this info is displayed on Northbank Road just off SH6. For all information on access roads into the park check the Plan and Prepare page for the park, or at the DOC Regional Visitor Centre in Nelson - phone +64 3 546 9339.
  • Huts and shelters removed as agreed in the National Recreation Opportunity Review are: in Kahurangi NP - Loveridge Hut, Haystack Hut. In Nelson Lakes National Park - Upper Glenroy Hut and Prospect Shelter. In Abel Tasman National Park - reclassification of Moa Park Hut to Moa Park Shelter.
