View to Tasman Bay from Mount Arthur
The Buller Kawatiri Area manages about 300,000ha of public conservation land in the northern West Coast between Punakaiki, the Buller Gorge and north to Kahurangi Point. The area is extensively forested with a few large river valleys and low alpine areas. Some valleys have maintained walking track access and backcountry huts but many of the more remote places do not have tracks, footbridges or huts.
Hunting for red deer, goats, feral pigs is popular throughout much of the area. Most species have a preferred hunting season. Chamois are uncommon.
