Flax swamp in front of a mixed podocarp forest at Carter Scenic Reserve.
This area of swampy forest on old river terraces represents a patchwork landscape once typical of the Wairarapa. Its varied habitats make it a haven for some rare species.
Short walks in the reserve can bring you in contact with some uncommon and interesting native flora.
There are no DOC campsites or huts in the reserve.
Find out how you get to Carter Scenic Reserve and review the rules you need to follow to protect the park and its inhabitants.
