Restoration goals and planning

The restoration of Mana Island is guided by a comprehensive ecological restoration plan that identified plant communities to reconstruct, suggested wetland restoration, and identified plant and animal species to introduce or re-introduce.

The major goal is to restore self-sustaining ecosystems similar to those likely to have existed on the island before human contact, while ensuring that the threatened species and communities that survived on the island continue to thrive.

Where compatible with the primary goal, this includes re-creation of plant communities using local seed sources, re-introduction of those native plants and animals known to have been present, introduction of ecologically appropriate threatened taxa, and eradication or control of pest species that compromise restoration goals.

The Friends of Mana Island Society have used the ecological restoration plan to select projects that match their enthusiasms and expertise. Together with the Department of Conservation, FOMI has successfully implemented many of the plan's recommendations.
