You can stay at Pinnacles Hut in the upper Kauaeranga Valley, a three hour walk from the roadend. Kauaeranga Valley has eight campgrounds next to the Kauaeranga River to choose from as well as some backcountry campsites.

Backcountry camping areas (with no road access) can be found along the Kauaeranga Kauri Trail :

  • near the Pinnacles Hut
  • at Billygoat Clearing
  • at Moss Creek

These are accessible via the track network and are reached after several hours of tramping.

Fees for backcountry camping (payable at the Kauaeranga Visitor Centre) are $5.00 per night for adults, $2.00 per night for youth (11-17 years) and child/preschoolers (0-10 years) are free.
