The Te Anau area is the gateway to Fiordland's Marine Reserves and Te Anau Wildlife Centre.
Fiordland’s ten marine reserves range in size from 93 to 3,672 hectares, and in total include over 10,000 hectares of inner fiord marine habitat. The reserves border the Fiordland National Park and are a fantastic example of protected natural environments.Location: Fiordland's marine reserves are found from Milford Sound in the north to Preservation Inlet on the southwest of the South Island.
Manapōuri is the fifth largest and second deepest lake in New Zealand. It is also one of the most beautiful. Several tracks start on the eastern shores of Lake Manapōuri. Location: Lake Manapōuri is located in Fiordland National Park. The town of Manapōuri is situated on its shores and is two hours drive to Queenstown and 15 minutes to Te Anau.
Mavora Lakes Park is an impressive landscape of mountains, lakes, forest and tussock grassland, recognised as part of the Te Wāhipounamu/South-West New Zealand World Heritage Area. Location: The Mavora Lakes are located on State Highway 94 between Mossburn and Te Anau.
The Milford Road section of the World Heritage Highway is a unique journey into the heart of Fiordland National Park. You can admire the scenery from a vehicle or stop to discover short walks or viewing sites along the way.Location: The Milford Road covers 119 kilometres from Te Anau to Milford Sound. The sealed road takes about two hours to drive without stops
Snowdon Forest is a popular area for visitors who can fish brown and rainbow trout; hunt deer, pigs or possums; or walk the many tracks. Alert: The tracks in Snowdon Forest are used infrequently; many are marked routes only.Location: It is flanked by SH 94 along Lake Te Anau's shoreline toward Te Anau Downs with Mossburn to the south and the Mavora Lakes and Livingstone Mountain road to the east of this national forest area.

The Takitimu Mountains are an impressive landform that provides opportunities for tramping, hunting and fishing amongst attractive open beech forest, tussock and screes.Location: The Takitimu Mountains are located in western Southland. Formed legal access is from Princhester Road (off SH 94) and the Dunrobin Valley Road south of Mossburn.
Visit the Te Anau Wildlife Centre to learn about some of Fiordland’s wildlife and view the rare flightless takahē. Location: It is located on the shores of Lake Te Anau, 10 minutes walk from the Department of Conservation Visitor Centre.
